A new building in Italy redefines the concept of the living
area - in the project the open-plan kitchen will be the communication center of
Design Studio So & So. We present you a house where the minimalist
furnishing principles are successfully implemented even on limited living
space. The simple interior design saves space, allows a seamless transition
between living room and kitchen with adjoining dining area, and offers a degree
of flexibility. Join us for a virtual tour of a purist townhouse where
functionality meets modernity.
The open kitchen with living room - functionality and minimalist style in one
The two-storey townhouse is located in a densely populated
residential area in Vicenza, Italy. The house is located on a narrow plot, the
neighboring house is right next to it. The minimal distance to the other
buildings was the first big challenge facing the architects - they had to turn
the house westwards to optimize lighting conditions. Nevertheless, the design
studio has succeeded on 230 square meters of living space to accommodate an
open kitchen with living room , bathroom, toilet, bedroom and guest rooms. Even
a garage for a car with direct connection to the house could be built.
The house became the home of a woman with vision problems -
the client lived in another building for more than 50 years and now needs a new
accommodation. It set the goal of an open living concept, where the individual
rooms seamlessly merge. Literally seamless - because the client has consciously
renounced doors. This change has made her life a lot easier, so she does not
have to open or close the door every now and then.
In fact, nothing is missing - but the accessories and
cooking utensils are all arranged in the cabinets. So the homeowner can always
keep track and quickly as needed plate, bowl and co. Find. Right next to the
kitchen is a dining area for six people. Designed according to the latest
mix-and-match trend, in puristic Scandinavian style: the solid wood table is
combined with chairs with plastic seats. Chic and easy to clean. So nothing is
in the way of pleasant cooking evenings with friends!
Open kitchen with wooden and stone flooring
Right next to the dining area, the architects have designed
a reading area with a three-seater sofa and a small side table. The resident
can end the day with a book or relax on the upholstered sofa. The color scheme
in the living room is typical of purism simple, but very elegant. Above all,
earth tones and gray nuances form a charming ensemble.
As functional and stylish as the furniture is selected, the
floor covering in the open living concept actually plays the main role. The
plank floor impresses with a raw untreated look and charming grain. Partly, the
floorboards are replaced by natural stone tiles - these bring variety to the
interior. But they are also a practical addition, because the individual
elements form a peculiar map and help the woman to orientate herself in the
house. If you follow the stone tiles, you can get directly from the kitchen to
the dining area, sofa, bathroom, toilet or bedroom. This minimizes the risk of
stumbling.
Also in the bedroom - also economical with only one bed and
wardrobe set up - the flooring leads around the bed, to the window. As already
mentioned, the owner has completely renounced doors. In this way, the hallway
serves as a connection, not as a room divider.
Small house with open living concept - the facade design
The house has a richly glazed façade, so the rooms are well
ventilated and bright in every season. The facade is simply painted in black
and white. The kitchen has direct access to the outside area - it opens through
large and wide sliding doors to the small garden.
A concrete wall shields the house and its resident from
outside views. On garden gate, the architects have renounced - at the request
of the homeowner. Instead, a natural garden paved straight garden path leads
directly to the front door. The covering is non-slip and has a width of 1.5
meters - enough so that two people can walk side by side. The front door is
equipped with the idea behind it for optimum comfort with a long door handle.
A house that scores with both minimalist aesthetics and
functionality - this is how the project by So & So Architects can be
described. Easy-care surfaces, simple furniture with clear lines, numerous
storage options and an innovative floor covering complete the living program.
The facade is also simple, but very practical - closed to the neighboring
houses, the building opens to the small garden. The project is a definite proof
that even on limited living space you can live comfortably. Provided, of
course, that the device is tailored to personal needs and preferences.
